When the weight won't lift: what happened to Elijah?
One day after fire fell from heaven, Elijah sat under a tree and asked God to end his life. God's response was no lecture: sleep, then two meals brought by an angel, a gentle question asked twice, a still small voice, and a new assignment with a companion. Scripture handles burnout with bread and rest before correction, and it corrects despair's biggest lie: 'I, even I only, am left' was never true.
This question arose from studying Can I be anxious and still trust God? and What do I do when I feel far from God? and Why does God allow suffering and evil? and It has been months. Why is my grief not getting easier?.

What the Scripture says
Exhaustion can follow triumph within twenty-four hours
Elijah had just seen fire from heaven; then one threat by messenger ('if I don't make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow') sent him running for his life, asking to die. Spiritual highs do not immunize against collapse, and the crash is not proof of hypocrisy. Even the boldest believers run out of fuel, and the Bible records it without embarrassment.
Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I don’t make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time!” When he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.”Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time. And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer–sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
God's first prescriptions were sleep and food, not lectures
Twice the angel touched him with the same message, 'Arise and eat,' adding only, 'because the journey is too great for you.' Cake baked on coals and a jar of water came before any conversation about faith or feelings. When the weight will not lift, the first questions are sometimes the most physical ones: sleep, food, and the acknowledgment that the journey really is too great for you, which is why God provides rather than scolds.
He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat!” He looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. Yahweh’s angel came again the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” He arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the Mount of God.And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
God asks the question twice and lets Elijah repeat himself
At Horeb, God asks simply, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?' Elijah answers with his grievance; after wind, earthquake, and fire have all passed without Yahweh in them, a still small voice asks the identical question again, and Elijah gives the identical answer. God does not interrupt the loop or shame the repetition; he draws the man out until the real wound is fully spoken, which is often how honest prayer actually proceeds.
He came there to a cave, and lodged there; and behold, Yahweh’s word came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and slain your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.” He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before Yahweh.” Behold, Yahweh passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before Yahweh; but Yahweh was not in the wind. After the wind an earthquake; but Yahweh was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake a fire passed; but Yahweh was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. It was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. Behold, a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?
Trust in him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us. Selah.Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.
Despair always inflates its arithmetic
Twice Elijah insists, 'I, even I only, am left.' Twice is telling: despair had become his lens. God's reply quietly demolishes it: 'Yet will I leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed to Baal.' The loneliness felt absolutely true from inside the cave, and it was off by six thousand nine hundred ninety-nine. Weights that won't lift tend to whisper the same exaggeration, you are alone, no one has ever felt this, nothing will change; measured against God's quiet facts, the math rarely survives.
He said, “I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and slain your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
He said, “I have been very jealous for Yahweh, the God of Armies; for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and slain your prophets with the sword. I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
Yet will I leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth which has not kissed him.”Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.
Restoration ends in purpose and companionship
God does not pension Elijah off in the cave. He sends him back with three tasks, including anointing Elisha 'to be prophet in your place', which means sharing the burden, not carrying it alone to the end. Like a father, 'Yahweh has compassion on those who fear him. For he knows how we are made. He remembers that we are dust.' The way through a weight that will not lift usually includes being handed work again, and someone to carry it alongside.
Yahweh said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. You shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi to be king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah to be prophet in your place. It shall happen, that he who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and he who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill. And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria: And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel–meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room. And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.
Like a father has compassion on his children, so Yahweh has compassion on those who fear him. For he knows how we are made. He remembers that we are dust.Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
