The questions/Trail: God the Father

What does it mean to abide in Christ's love?

To abide in Christ's love is not to climb toward it but to remain in it: to stay connected to Jesus as a branch stays in the vine, to live out of the love He already gives rather than trying to earn it. Jesus abided in the Father's love by keeping His commandments, and He calls us to do the same. The fruit of abiding is not a feeling but a life: joy, fruit, and love for others that flow from remaining in Him.

This question arose from studying How do I experience the love of God day to day? and How can I know God's affection for me is real and not just a doctrine?.

What the Scripture says

Abiding means remaining, not achieving

Jesus commands a rest, not a struggle: 'Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can't bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.' He says, 'I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.' To abide is to stay connected to the source, to live from the life He gives rather than producing it ourselves.

Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.
John 15:4
I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:5
Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.
John 15:9

It begins with the love you are given

The command is built on a gift already given: 'Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.' John makes the same point: 'We know and have believed the love which God has for us,' and 'he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.' Abiding is not earning His love by staying good; it is remaining in the love He has already poured out on us in Christ, the love nothing can separate us from.

Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.
John 15:9
We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
1 John 4:16
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39
How precious is your loving kindness, God! The children of men take refuge under the shadow of your wings.
Psalm 36:7

We abide by keeping His commandments and His word

Jesus grounds abiding in obedience: 'If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and remain in his love.' He also says, 'If you remain in me, and my words remain in you,' you will ask and receive. Abiding is sustained by the word dwelling in us and by walking in obedience, not as a way to be loved but as the staying place of the already-loved.

If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and remain in his love.
John 15:10
If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.
John 15:7
“This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.
John 15:12
No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God remains in us, and his love has been perfected in us.
1 John 4:12

Its fruit is joy, fruitfulness, and love

Jesus names the harvest of abiding: 'I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full,' and 'in this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples.' The first fruit of remaining in the Vine is love for the brothers: 'This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.' Abiding is not a private feeling; it is a life that bears the fruit of love.

I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.
John 15:11
“In this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples.
John 15:8
“This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.
John 15:12
I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:5

It is the environment of the whole Christian life

Paul describes our standing as 'rooted and grounded in love,' able to 'comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth' of Christ's love, and John insists that 'God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God.' To abide in Christ's love is to live consciously in the truth that you are loved, held, and welcomed by the Father through the Son, and to let that love shape every obedience, every word, and every relationship. It is the air the Christian breathes.

that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
Ephesians 3:17-18
We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
1 John 4:16
How precious is your loving kindness, God! The children of men take refuge under the shadow of your wings.
Psalm 36:7
nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:39
