Why did God send Jonah to Nineveh?
God sent a prophet to preach doom over a brutal Gentile superpower, and then forgave the whole city the moment it repented. Jonah ran from the call, raged at the mercy, and sat outside the walls hoping for fire, while the story quietly exposed his small heart beside God's great compassion. Jesus took the name of Jonah and turned it into the sign of His own death and resurrection.

Why did God send His people into exile?
Exile was covenant discipline, not covenant collapse: after centuries of warnings ignored, Jerusalem fell, the temple burned, and Judah went to Babylon. Yet even there God promised to gather, cleanse, and renew His people, and the return home became another picture of the greater rescue to come.

How does the old story reach Jesus?
At exactly the right time, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law: the seed of Abraham in whom nations are blessed, the Passover Lamb, the Son of David on the throne, and the end of exile. Jesus is not a new story interrupting the old one; He is the old story arriving.

How should Christians live as exiles in their own culture?
Exile is the right picture for the Christian life, and it is not a defeat. Peter addresses his readers as foreigners living in the Dispersion, and he tells them to do two things at once: abstain from the desires that war against the soul, and live so well among their neighbors that slander turns into glory to God. Jeremiah told the exiles in Babylon to build houses, plant gardens, and seek the city's peace, because their welfare was bound up with it. So Christians neither conquer the culture, nor flee it, nor melt into it. They bless it, stay distinct where God has spoken, expect hostility without surprise, and keep their hope fixed on the city that is coming.
