What did Isaiah see in the temple?
In the year King Uzziah died, Isaiah saw Yahweh on a throne, high and lifted up, with seraphim crying holy, holy, holy. The vision undid him, then cleansed him, then sent him. John tells us whose glory he saw: Isaiah saw Jesus and spoke of Him.

What the Scripture says
A throne above a dying king
The vision is dated by a funeral: king Uzziah died. What Isaiah saw was the throne that does not empty. The Lord sat high and lifted up, His train filled the temple, and the seraphim called to one another, 'Holy, holy, holy, is Yahweh of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory!' Revelation gives the same throne and the same unending song.
In the year that king Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up; and his train filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each one had six wings. With two he covered his face. With two he covered his feet. With two he flew. One called to another, and said, “Holy, holy, holy, is Yahweh of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory!” The foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
The four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within. They have no rest day and night, saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come!”And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
The vision undid him before it sent him
Isaiah's first word is not a sermon but a woe: 'Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips', and he adds that his eyes have seen the King. Seeing God does not flatter the seer; it exposes him. Every true call begins with a person who has stopped comparing himself to others.
Then I said, “Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, Yahweh of Armies!”Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.
Cleansed from the altar, not from himself
A seraph flies to him with a live coal taken from the altar with tongs, touches his mouth, and says, 'your iniquity is taken away, and your sin forgiven.' The fire that cleanses Isaiah comes from the place of sacrifice, and it is applied to him rather than produced by him. That is the shape of every cleansing in Scripture.
Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar. He touched my mouth with it, and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away, and your sin forgiven.”Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
Here I am. Send me!
Only after the coal does Isaiah hear the question, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?', and answer, 'Here I am. Send me!' The commission that follows is a hard one: a people who hear but do not understand, until the land is laid waste and only a stump remains, the holy seed. God tells the prophet in advance that the work will look like failure, and he goes anyway.
I heard the Lord’s voice, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am. Send me!” He said, “Go, and tell this people, ‘You hear indeed, but don’t understand; and you see indeed, but don’t perceive.’ Make the heart of this people fat. Make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn again, and be healed.” Then I said, “Lord, how long?” He answered, “Until cities are waste without inhabitant, and houses without man, and the land becomes utterly waste, And Yahweh has removed men far away, and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land. If there is a tenth left in it, that also will in turn be consumed: as a terebinth, and as an oak, whose stock remains when they are felled; so the holy seed is its stock.”Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed. Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate, And the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land. But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.
Whose glory did he see?
John settles the identity. After recording the unbelief of Jesus' own generation, he quotes Isaiah 53:1 and then says that Isaiah spoke these things because he saw His glory and spoke of Him. The throne of Isaiah 6 and the suffering servant of Isaiah 53 belong to the same person, and the New Testament puts them side by side.
But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they didn’t believe in him, that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke, “Lord, who has believed our report? To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” For this cause they couldn’t believe, for Isaiah said again, “He has blinded their eyes and he hardened their heart, lest they should see with their eyes, and perceive with their heart, and would turn, and I would heal them.” Isaiah said these things when he saw his glory, and spoke of him.But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
