What is the kingdom of God?
The kingdom of God is God's reign: His rule and salvation arriving in Jesus Christ. Jesus announced it as breaking into the world, called people to enter it through repentance and faith, and taught its surprising way of growth, like a seed and leaven, belonging to the poor in spirit. The kingdom is both already present in Christ and not yet complete, and it is the good news at the center of the gospel.
This question arose from studying What is the gospel? and Who is Jesus?.

What the Scripture says
The kingdom is God's reign breaking into the world
Jesus opened His ministry with the announcement: 'The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News.' The kingdom is not primarily a place; it is God reigning, God's rule arriving in Jesus. When He casts out demons by the finger of God, He says the kingdom of God has come upon men. In Jesus, the reign of God was breaking into history.
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News.”
But if I by the finger of God cast out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come to you.
neither will they say, ‘Look, here!’ or, ‘Look, there!’ for behold, the Kingdom of God is within you.”
It is entered through repentance and faith
The call to the kingdom is a call to turn: 'The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News.' Jesus taught that blessing belongs to 'the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.' The kingdom is not stormed by the self-sufficient but received by the humble, who repent of self and trust the King.
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News.”
From that time, Jesus began to preach, and to say, “Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
It grows in hidden, surprising ways
Jesus kept comparing the kingdom to things that start small and become great: a mustard seed that grows into a tree, leaven that works through the whole loaf, seed that sprouts while the farmer sleeps. It is 'like a treasure hidden in the field... in his joy, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.' The kingdom comes quietly, and it is worth everything.
He set another parable before them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field;
He spoke another parable to them. “The Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast, which a woman took, and hid in three measuresof meal, until it was all leavened.”
He said, “The Kingdom of God is as if a man should cast seed on the earth,
“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid. In his joy, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.
“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who is a merchant seeking fine pearls,
It is already here, and not yet complete
The kingdom has come in Christ and is still to come in fullness. Jesus told the disciples the kingdom of God was 'within you,' present in their midst, and He taught them to pray, 'your Kingdom come.' At the end, 'the end comes, when he will deliver up the Kingdom to God... when he will have abolished all rule and all authority and power.' We live between the kingdom's arrival and its completion, receiving it by faith now and awaiting it in glory.
neither will they say, ‘Look, here!’ or, ‘Look, there!’ for behold, the Kingdom of God is within you.”
Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.
Then the end comes, when he will deliver up the Kingdom to God, even the Father; when he will have abolished all rule and all authority and power.
Don’t be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.
It is the good news that reshapes a life
The kingdom is not only a future hope; it is a present way of life under Christ's rule. Paul says 'the Kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.' Jesus calls us to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, for it is the Father's good pleasure to give it to us. To enter the kingdom is to come under the rule of a gracious King, and to live in the world as citizens of His reign.
for the Kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.
Don’t be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.
