The questions/Trail: Suffering & God's Will

How do I balance planning with trusting God?

Scripture calls us to the balance of faithful planning and humble trust: make plans, work diligently, and use wisdom, while holding our plans loosely before a sovereign God, saying with James, 'if the Lord wills.' Planning without trust becomes anxious control; trust without planning becomes lazy passivity. God honors faithful stewardship and directs the steps of those who commit their way to Him.

What the Scripture says

Plan as a faithful steward, with open hands

James does not forbid planning; he forbids the spirit that plans as though the future were guaranteed and self-made. He warns those who say, 'today or tomorrow we'll go into this city... trade, and make a profit,' because 'you don't know what your life will be like tomorrow.' The right way is to say, 'If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.' Plan well, and hold the plan in an open hand before God.

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow let’s go into this city, and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit.”
James 4:13
Whereas you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.
James 4:14
For you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.”
James 4:15

Commit your work to the Lord

Planning is done in dependence. The proverb promises, 'Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed,' and 'a man's heart plans his course, but Yahweh directs his steps.' David sang, 'Commit your way to Yahweh. Trust also in him, and he will do this.' We are not to abandon planning for passivity; we are to plan within a deeper trust, offering our plans to the God who directs and overrules.

Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed.
Proverbs 16:3
A man’s heart plans his course, but Yahweh directs his steps.
Proverbs 16:9
Commit your way to Yahweh. Trust also in him, and he will do this:
Psalm 37:5
There are many plans in a man’s heart, but Yahweh’s counsel will prevail.
Proverbs 19:21

But do not boast as though the future were yours

The warning is against presumption. James calls such confident planning what it is when God is left out: 'you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil.' And Jesus told of a man who had abundant crops and planned years of ease, saying to his soul, 'you have many goods laid up for many years,' only to hear, 'You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you.' We plan, and we remember that we do not own tomorrow.

But now you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil.
James 4:16
I will tell my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.”’
Luke 12:19
“But God said to him, ‘You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?’
Luke 12:20
Whereas you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.
James 4:14

Seek first the kingdom, not anxious security

Trust keeps planning from becoming worry. Jesus tells us not to be anxious about what we will eat, drink, or wear, 'for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God's Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well,' and not to be anxious about tomorrow, for each day has enough of its own trouble. We work and plan, but our security is in the Father, not in our arrangements.

But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthew 6:33
Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.
Matthew 6:34
Therefore don’t be like them, for your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him.
Matthew 6:8
Don’t seek what you will eat or what you will drink; neither be anxious.
Luke 12:29

The wise balance: work hard, trust fully

The balance is not a compromise; it is wholehearted in both directions. Work with all your might, as the Preacher urges, whatever your hand finds to do, because that is the stewardship God gives. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding, and in all your ways acknowledge Him. Let your requests be made known to God in everything, and do not set your hope on uncertain riches but on the living God. Plan diligently, pray constantly, and rest in the God who holds all steps.

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, where you are going.
Ecclesiastes 9:10
Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding.
Proverbs 3:5
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:6
In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
Philippians 4:6
Charge those who are rich in this present world that they not be haughty, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy;
1 Timothy 6:17
