The questions/Trail: The Church

Does baptism save a person?

Baptism is commanded and precious, but Scripture is clear that the water does not save apart from faith in Christ. Salvation is by grace through faith, and baptism is the sign and seal of that salvation: it pictures dying and rising with Christ and expresses the faith that trusts Him. The New Testament ties baptism to the response of faith and forgiveness, but it never makes the rite the ground of salvation.

This question arose from studying Should infants be baptized, or only believers? and What is baptism?.

What the Scripture says

Scripture ties baptism to repentance and faith

Peter's call is vivid: 'Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit,' and the response is storied: 'those who gladly received his word were baptized.' Ananias said to Paul, 'Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.' In every case, baptism is joined to repentance, to the calling on the name of the Lord, to faith that has already received the word.

Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:38
Then those who gladly received his word were baptized. There were added that day about three thousand souls.
Acts 2:41
Now why do you wait? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’
Acts 22:16
He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who disbelieves will be condemned.
Mark 16:16

But salvation is by grace through faith, not a rite

The ground of salvation is stated without ambiguity: 'for by grace you have been saved through faith... it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.' Paul insists that God 'justifies the ungodly' who believes apart from works, and Christ sent him 'not to baptize, but to preach the Good News,' so the heart of the gospel is not the water but the cross. If the water saved by its own power, salvation would be a work, and grace would not be grace.

for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9
But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
Romans 4:5
For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the Good News—not in wisdom of words, so that the cross of Christ wouldn’t be made void.
1 Corinthians 1:17
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23

Baptism is the sign and seal of what faith receives

Peter's much-quoted line is careful: baptism 'saves' us, 'not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.' Baptism does not save by washing dirt from the body; it answers God with a good conscience through faith in the risen Christ. Romans pictures it as union with Christ: 'we were buried therefore with him through baptism to death, that just like Christ was raised... so we also might walk in newness of life.' The water is the sign; Christ and faith are the reality.

This is a symbol of baptism, which now saves you—not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
1 Peter 3:21
Or don’t you know that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him through baptism to death, that just like Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:3-4
having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
Colossians 2:12
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Galatians 3:27

Faith, not the rite, is the instrument of grace

Paul's order is unmistakable: 'you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus,' and then, 'for as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.' Faith first, baptism as its expression, and where the order is reversed Scripture never places the rite before the heart. At Cornelius' house the Holy Spirit fell on the Gentiles as they heard the word, before they were baptized, and Peter asked, 'Can anyone forbid these people from being baptized... They have received the Holy Spirit just like us.' The Spirit's coming and the believers' faith preceded the water.

For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Galatians 3:26-27
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word. They of the circumcision who believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was also poured out on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in other languages and magnifying God. Then Peter answered, “Can anyone forbid these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just like us.” He commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay some days.
Acts 10:44-48
“Can anyone forbid these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just like us.”
Acts 10:47
Then those who gladly received his word were baptized. There were added that day about three thousand souls.
Acts 2:41

So baptism is obedience, not a magical act

Baptism is not to be despised or neglected: it is the Lord's own command, the visible pledge of our union with Him, and a public confession of faith. But it does not confer grace on the unrepentant, and it does not save apart from trust in Christ. The thief on the cross was promised paradise the same day, never having been baptized, while millions who were baptized in water stand condemned if they did not know the Savior. The water is real and meaningful; the gospel is the power of God unto salvation.

He said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” Jesus said to him, “Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
Luke 23:42-43
For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Romans 10:13
He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who disbelieves will be condemned.
Mark 16:16
Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:38
