Because singing does things speaking alone cannot: it teaches, it remembers, and it carries truth down into the body. The Bible's songs come from the sea shore, the prison cell, and the ruined harvest, which means the command to sing is not a command to feel happy. It is an instruction for what to do with truth while your feelings catch up.

Exodus 15:1-21
As you read: Israel singing on the far side of the sea, theology you can dance to, and Miriam leading the response.
1Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to Yahweh, and said, “I will sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously. The horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.
2Yah is my strength and song. He has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him; my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
3Yahweh is a man of war. Yahweh is his name.
4He has cast Pharaoh’s chariots and his army into the sea. His chosen captains are sunk in the Red Sea.
5The deeps cover them. They went down into the depths like a stone.
6Your right hand, Yahweh, is glorious in power. Your right hand, Yahweh, dashes the enemy in pieces.
7In the greatness of your excellency, you overthrow those who rise up against you. You send out your wrath. It consumes them as stubble.
8With the blast of your nostrils, the waters were piled up. The floods stood upright as a heap. The deeps were congealed in the heart of the sea.
9The enemy said, ‘I will pursue. I will overtake. I will divide the plunder. My desire shall be satisfied on them. I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.’
10You blew with your wind. The sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.
11Who is like you, Yahweh, among the gods? Who is like you, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?
12You stretched out your right hand. The earth swallowed them.
13“You, in your loving kindness, have led the people that you have redeemed. You have guided them in your strength to your holy habitation.
14The peoples have heard. They tremble. Pangs have taken hold on the inhabitants of Philistia.
15Then the chiefs of Edom were dismayed. Trembling takes hold of the mighty men of Moab. All the inhabitants of Canaan are melted away.
16Terror and dread falls on them. By the greatness of your arm they are as still as a stone— until your people pass over, Yahweh, until the people pass over who you have purchased.
17You shall bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of your inheritance, the place, Yahweh, which you have made for yourself to dwell in; the sanctuary, Lord, which your hands have established.
18Yahweh shall reign forever and ever.”
19For the horses of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and Yahweh brought back the waters of the sea on them; but the children of Israel walked on dry land in the midst of the sea.
20Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dances.
21Miriam answered them, “Sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously. The horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”
Psalms 96
As you read: Singing aimed outward: at the nations, declaring glory and salvation day by day.
1Sing to Yahweh a new song! Sing to Yahweh, all the earth.
2Sing to Yahweh! Bless his name! Proclaim his salvation from day to day!
3Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.
4For great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised! He is to be feared above all gods.
5For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but Yahweh made the heavens.
6Honor and majesty are before him. Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7Ascribe to Yahweh, you families of nations, ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength.
8Ascribe to Yahweh the glory due to his name. Bring an offering, and come into his courts.
9Worship Yahweh in holy array. Tremble before him, all the earth.
10Say among the nations, “Yahweh reigns.” The world is also established. It can’t be moved. He will judge the peoples with equity.
11Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice. Let the sea roar, and its fullness!
12Let the field and all that is in it exult! Then all the trees of the woods shall sing for joy
13before Yahweh; for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, the peoples with his truth.
Within hours of crossing the sea, before any law was given or tabernacle built, Israel sang. Miriam took a tambourine and the answer rolled back across the shore: 'Sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously.' Redemption produced music the way fire produces heat. When God saves, His people do not merely report it; they burst into song about it.

Paul ties singing directly to teaching: 'teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.' A congregation's songs are its catechism; long after the sermon fades, the melody keeps delivering the doctrine. This is also why what we sing matters so much: we are memorizing theology every time we open our mouths.

“speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; singing, and making melody in your heart to the Lord;”Ephesians 5:19
Habakkuk wrote his song on the worst economic day imaginable: no figs, no fruit, no flocks. 'Yet I will rejoice in Yahweh. I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!' James gives the same instruction both ways: suffering? pray. cheerful? 'Let him sing praises.' And Hebrews calls praise a sacrifice: 'the fruit of lips which proclaim allegiance to his name.' A sacrifice, by definition, costs something. Singing when you feel nothing is not hypocrisy; it is faith offering its fruit early, before the feelings ripen.

In Philippi, beaten and chained at midnight, Paul and Silas were 'praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.' Nobody sings in a stocks because it is culturally expected. They sing because the gospel gives them something true enough to sing in the dark, and the listening prisoners heard it. Your song has an audience you may never see.
