The questions/Trail: Who We Are

Why does every human life have dignity and worth?

Every human life has dignity and worth because every person is made in the image of God. This standing does not depend on ability, age, usefulness, or performance; it is a gift given at creation. From the unborn to the elderly, from every nation and condition, each person bears God's image, and the life Jesus gave Himself for confirms its value.

This question arose from studying What does it mean to be made in God's image? and What is sin, and where did it come from?.

What the Scripture says

We bear the image of God

The ground of human dignity is settled in the first pages of the Bible: 'God created man in his own image. In God's image he created him; male and female he created them.' David marvels at the same truth: 'For you have made him a little lower than God, and crowned him with glory and honor.' This is what makes a person a person: not usefulness or ability, but the image of the Creator stamped on every human being.

God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:27
For you have made him a little lower than God, and crowned him with glory and honor.
Psalm 8:5
God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Genesis 1:26
what is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him?
Psalm 8:4

The image carries a steward's calling

God made us in His image to bear His likeness in the world: 'Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea... and over all the earth,' and He blessed them, 'Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it.' Psalm 8 echoes it: 'You make him ruler over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet.' Human worth is bound up with human vocation: we are the image-bearers placed in creation to reflect God's rule as His representatives.

God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Genesis 1:26
God blessed them. God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 1:28
You make him ruler over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet:
Psalm 8:6
For you have made him a little lower than God, and crowned him with glory and honor.
Psalm 8:5

The image and the sacredness of life survive the fall

After the fall, with all its wickedness, God upholds the sanctity of life on the same ground: 'Whoever sheds man's blood, his blood will be shed by man, for God made man in his own image.' The image is not erased by sin; it remains the reason human life is sacred, and James still appeals to it: we are not to curse 'men, who are made in the image of God.' Sin spoils the likeness but does not strip the dignity.

Whoever sheds man’s blood, his blood will be shed by man, for God made man in his own image.
Genesis 9:6
With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.
James 3:9
Whoever sheds man’s blood, his blood will be shed by man, for God made man in his own image.
Genesis 9:6
I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.
Psalm 139:14

It covers every human being

Because the image is given at creation, dignity is universal. Psalm 139 celebrates the person 'in my mother's womb,' 'fearfully and wonderfully made,' and 'woven together' by God, so even the unborn bear His handiwork and worth. James refuses to bless God while cursing any man 'who are made in the image of God,' and Revelation pictures the redeemed as 'a great multitude... out of every nation and of all tribes, peoples, and languages.' From the womb to every people and condition, the image holds.

For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.
Psalm 139:13-14
My frame wasn’t hidden from you, when I was made in secret, woven together in the depths of the earth.
Psalm 139:15
Your eyes saw my body. In your book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there were none of them.
Psalm 139:16
With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.
James 3:9
After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude, which no man could number, out of every nation and of all tribes, peoples, and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, dressed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands.
Revelation 7:9

Its ultimate weight: Christ died for each person

The deepest proof of human worth is the price God paid to redeem it. Paul says Christ 'died for all, that those who live should no longer live to themselves, but to him who for their sakes died and rose again,' and God 'didn't spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all.' Jesus asked, 'What will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life?' A soul is worth more than the world, because the Son of God died to save it.

He died for all, that those who live should no longer live to themselves, but to him who for their sakes died and rose again.
2 Corinthians 5:15
He who didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things?
Romans 8:32
For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life?
Matthew 16:26
Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.
Matthew 10:31
