Why are there four Gospels, not one?
God did not give us one biography of Jesus but four, each written from a different vantage by a different hand. They are not competing accounts but complementary witnesses: Matthew shows the promised King, Mark the powerful Son of God, Luke the Savior of the outsider, and John the eternal Word made flesh. Read together, they give a fuller portrait than any single account could, and their differences are the fingerprints of real testimony.
This question arose from studying How does the old story reach Jesus?.

What the Scripture says
Four witnesses, one gospel
The church did not receive a single authorized biography; it received four accounts, and kept them all. Luke tells us his method: he followed the reports of those who “from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word,” and wrote in order so that Theophilus “might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.” John names his purpose too: the signs were written “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.” Four accounts serve one aim: faith in the same Lord.
Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us, even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus; that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
Therefore Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name. And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Each one wrote to a different reader
Matthew opens with a genealogy and the title “the son of David, the son of Abraham,” writing for readers who knew the promises. Mark begins in a single sentence with action and the confession “the Son of God.” Luke addresses a Gentile official and traces the story back to Adam. John goes back before creation itself and writes so that readers might believe. The same Jesus, four doorways.
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
The beginning of the Good News of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus; It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.
but these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name. But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Eyewitness testimony, not legend
Peter denies that the apostles followed “cunningly devised fables,” grounding his claim in what he saw: “we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.” John says the one who saw “has testified, and his testimony is true.” Paul hands on the earliest summary of the faith he received, naming Peter, the twelve, and more than five hundred witnesses, most still alive when he wrote. This is history with named witnesses, not a story that grew in the dark.
For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
He who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, that you may believe. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers at once, most of whom remain until now, but some have also fallen asleep. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.
Each witness selects, and together they complete
None of the Gospels claims to be exhaustive. John says plainly that there are “many other things which Jesus did,” and that even the world itself could not hold the books if they were all written. Luke knew that many had undertaken “to set in order a narrative,” and he added his own so that Theophilus might know the certainty of what he had been taught. Each account selects; together they give us what God meant us to have.
There are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they would all be written, I suppose that even the world itself wouldn’t have room for the books that would be written. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
Read them as one story
The Gospels are not four separate religions but four roads into one life. Jesus Himself read the whole of Scripture as being about Him: “Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” Read each Gospel for its own emphasis, then read them together for the whole Christ, and follow Him into the rest of the story.
Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
