Can God actually hate a worship service?
Yes, and Scripture says so in the most startling language in the Bible. Through Isaiah and Amos, God calls His own appointed feasts a burden, tells Israel to take away the noise of their songs, and refuses to hear their prayers, because the worship had detached from obedience. God is not moved by religious production. He wants the songs and the life to be about the same God.

God can refuse worship He himself prescribed
Isaiah 1 is one of the most unsettling passages in Scripture because God is not rejecting pagan ritual; He is rejecting His own. 'What are the multitude of your sacrifices to me?', says Yahweh. 'I have had enough of the burnt offerings of rams.' He even names prayer among the refused things: 'When you make many prayers, I will not hear.' The problem was never the liturgy; it was the lives attached to it.

When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.
Hollow worship is not neutral; it offends
Amos goes further than refusal: 'I hate, I despise your feasts, and I can't stand your solemn assemblies.' Even the music, the part we most associate with sincerity, gets sent away: 'Take away from me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps.' Worship performed for an audience while injustice runs unchecked is noise to God, however beautiful it sounds in the room.
God tells us what He wanted all along
Right after sending the music away, Amos delivers the alternative: 'But let justice roll on like rivers, and righteousness like a mighty stream.' God never wanted ceremony instead of obedience; He wanted ceremony flowing out of obedience. A life of justice and righteousness is the river, and gathered worship is meant to stand downstream of it, not substitute for it.
Jesus applied the diagnosis to the religious experts
Centuries later Jesus quotes this very indictment of Isaiah against the Pharisees: 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. But in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.' The phrase to sit with is 'in vain': worship can be fully attended, beautifully executed, and completely empty. Distance of heart is measurable at the offering plate before it is audible in the singing.
