Glory · Who We Are
Sin is any falling short of God's perfect standard, and at its root it is rebellion against God Himself. It entered the world through Adam's disobedience, it spreads to every person, and it brings death and separation. The good news is that where sin abounded, grace abounded much more in Christ.

Genesis 3
As you read: The serpent, the tree, and the rupture of trust.
1Now the serpent was more subtle than any animal of the field which Yahweh God had made. He said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden?’”
2The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees of the garden,
3but not the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden. God has said, ‘You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”
4The serpent said to the woman, “You won’t surely die,
5for God knows that in the day you eat it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took some of its fruit, and ate; and she gave some to her husband with her, and he ate it, too.
7Their eyes were opened, and they both knew that they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together, and made coverings for themselves.
8They heard the voice of Yahweh God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden.
9Yahweh God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”
10The man said, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.”
11God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”
12The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13Yahweh God said to the woman, “What have you done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14Yahweh God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all livestock, and above every animal of the field. You shall go on your belly and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.
15I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.”
16To the woman he said, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth. In pain you will bear children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
17To Adam he said, “Because you have listened to your wife’s voice, and ate from the tree, about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ the ground is cursed for your sake. You will eat from it with much labor all the days of your life.
18It will yield thorns and thistles to you; and you will eat the herb of the field.
19By the sweat of your face will you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
20The man called his wife Eve because she would be the mother of all the living.
21Yahweh God made coats of animal skins for Adam and for his wife, and clothed them.
22Yahweh God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand, and also take of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever...”
23Therefore Yahweh God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken.
24So he drove out the man; and he placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
Romans 5:12-21
As you read: Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin.
12Therefore as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; and so death passed to all men, because all sinned.
13For until the law, sin was in the world; but sin is not charged when there is no law.
14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those whose sins weren’t like Adam’s disobedience, who is a foreshadowing of him who was to come.
15But the free gift isn’t like the trespass. For if by the trespass of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God, and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.
16The gift is not as through one who sinned: for the judgment came by one to condemnation, but the free gift came of many trespasses to justification.
17For if by the trespass of the one, death reigned through the one; so much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ.
18So then as through one trespass, all men were condemned; even so through one act of righteousness, all men were justified to life.
19For as through the one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one, many will be made righteous.
20The law came in besides, that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace abounded more exceedingly;
21that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
James 1:13-15
As you read: Desire conceived gives birth to sin, and sin brings forth death.
13Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one.
14But each one is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.
15Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, produces death.
1 John 3:4-10
As you read: The definition, and the cure: the Son of God came to take away sin.
4Everyone who sins also commits lawlessness. Sin is lawlessness.
5You know that he was revealed to take away our sins, and in him is no sin.
6Whoever remains in him doesn’t sin. Whoever sins hasn’t seen him, neither knows him.
7Little children, let no one lead you astray. He who does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. To this end the Son of God was revealed, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9Whoever is born of God doesn’t commit sin, because his seed remains in him; and he can’t sin, because he is born of God.
10In this the children of God are revealed, and the children of the devil. Whoever doesn’t do righteousness is not of God, neither is he who doesn’t love his brother.
Sin is lawlessness: transgression of God's revealed will. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Whoever knows the right thing to do and does not do it, for him it is sin: sin is both what we do against God and what we refuse to do for Him.
“Everyone who sins also commits lawlessness. Sin is lawlessness.”1 John 3:4
“for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;”Romans 3:23
“To him therefore who knows to do good, and doesn’t do it, to him it is sin.”James 4:17
Through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death passed to all men, because all sinned. The woman saw that the tree was desirable, and she took it and gave it to her husband, and the world broke.
“Therefore as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; and so death passed to all men, because all sinned.”Romans 5:12
“When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took some of its fruit, and ate; and she gave some to her husband with her, and he ate it, too. Their eyes were opened, and they both knew that they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together, and made coverings for themselves.”Genesis 3:6-7
“For as through the one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one, many will be made righteous.”Romans 5:19
The wages of sin is death. Your iniquities have separated you from your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you. You were dead in your trespasses and sins, children of wrath. Sin is not a small thing; it is cosmic rebellion with cosmic cost.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”Romans 6:23
“but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.”Isaiah 59:2
“You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience; among whom we also all once lived in the lust of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.”Ephesians 2:1-3
Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. There is no condemnation for those in Christ.
“The law came in besides, that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace abounded more exceedingly; that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”Romans 5:20-21
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”1 John 1:9
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”Romans 8:1
