Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change of direction: turning from sin and turning to God. It is the necessary companion of faith: to believe the gospel is to turn from the sins it forgives. Repentance is God's gift and the doorway to a new life.

Luke 13:1-9
As you read: Jesus: everyone is under judgment apart from repentance; no one is exempt.
1Now there were some present at the same time who told him about the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
2Jesus answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered such things?
3I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way.
4Or those eighteen, on whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them; do you think that they were worse offenders than all the men who dwell in Jerusalem?
5I tell you, no, but, unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way.”
6He spoke this parable. “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it, and found none.
7He said to the vine dresser, ‘Behold, these three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and found none. Cut it down. Why does it waste the soil?’
8He answered, ‘Lord, leave it alone this year also, until I dig around it, and fertilize it.
9If it bears fruit, fine; but if not, after that, you can cut it down.’”
Acts 3:17-21
As you read: Repentance brings times of refreshing from the Lord.
17“Now, brothers, I know that you did this in ignorance, as did also your rulers.
18But the things which God announced by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he thus fulfilled.
19“Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord,
20and that he may send Christ Jesus, who was ordained for you before,
21whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God spoke long ago by the mouth of his holy prophets.
2 Corinthians 7:8-11
As you read: The sorrow that leads to repentance, and what it actually produces.
8For though I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it, though I did regret it. For I see that my letter made you sorry, though just for a while.
9I now rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that you were made sorry to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly way, that you might suffer loss by us in nothing.
10For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world works death.
11For behold, this same thing, that you were made sorry in a godly way, what earnest care it worked in you. Yes, what defense, indignation, fear, longing, zeal, and vengeance! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be pure in the matter.
Mark 1:14-15
As you read: Jesus pairs repentance and faith as the two sides of one response.
14Now after John was taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the Good News of the Kingdom of God,
15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand! Repent, and believe in the Good News.”
Jesus' first word was 'repent, and believe in the Good News.' Paul declared that people should 'repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.' It is not just feeling sorry; it is changing direction, from sin and toward God.

“but declared first to them of Damascus, at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.”Acts 26:20
“For they themselves report concerning us what kind of a reception we had from you; and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God,”1 Thessalonians 1:9
God exalted Jesus 'to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins,' and the church rejoiced that 'God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.' Repentance is not something we must produce by force of will; it is something God works in us.
“God exalted him with his right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins.”Acts 5:31
“When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life!””Acts 11:18
“in gentleness correcting those who oppose him: perhaps God may give them repentance leading to a full knowledge of the truth,”2 Timothy 2:25
'godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, which brings no regret,' unlike worldly sorrow that only grieved over being caught. It is sorrow over sin, toward God: the broken and contrite heart He will not despise.
“For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world works death.”2 Corinthians 7:10
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”Psalm 51:17
“Tear your heart, and not your garments, and turn to Yahweh, your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and relents from sending calamity.”Joel 2:13
'Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out.' Ezekiel calls Israel to 'cast away from you all your transgressions… and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit.' Repentance that stops at emotion is not yet repentance; it must turn.

“Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways, says the Lord Yahweh. Return, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Cast away from you all your transgressions, in which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, house of Israel?”Ezekiel 18:30-31
“He who conceals his sins doesn’t prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”Proverbs 28:13
Paul preached 'repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus.' Luke sums up the mission as 'repentance and remission of sins' proclaimed in His name. You cannot turn to Jesus while refusing to turn from what grieves Him.
“testifying both to Jews and to Greeks repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus.”Acts 20:21
“and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”Luke 24:47
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.”James 4:8-10
