Justification is God's declaration that a person is righteous, not on the basis of who they are or what they have done, but on the basis of Christ. In it, the Judge accepts the sinner for Jesus' sake, pardoning their sins and crediting Christ's righteousness to them.

Romans 3:21-26
As you read: God has set forth Jesus as a propitiation, that He might be just and the justifier.
21But now apart from the law, a righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified by the law and the prophets;
22even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all those who believe. For there is no distinction,
23for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;
24being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus;
25whom God sent to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God’s forbearance;
26to demonstrate his righteousness at this present time; that he might himself be just, and the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus.
Romans 4:1-8
As you read: To him who does not work but believes, faith is counted as righteousness.
1What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh?
2For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God.
3For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
4Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed.
5But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
6Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works,
7“Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
8Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.”
2 Corinthians 5:17-21

17Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.
18But all things are of God, who reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ, and gave to us the ministry of reconciliation;

20We are therefore ambassadors on behalf of Christ, as though God were entreating by us: we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
21For him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf; so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Romans 5:1-11
As you read: Justified by faith: we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ;
2through whom we also have our access by faith into this grace in which we stand. We rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
3Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering works perseverance;
4and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope:
5and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
6For while we were yet weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
7For one will hardly die for a righteous man. Yet perhaps for a righteous person someone would even dare to die.
8But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
9Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we will be saved from God’s wrath through him.
10For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we will be saved by his life.
11Not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
Justification is a courtroom word, the verdict of the Judge: 'righteous.' Paul says we are 'justified by faith apart from the works of the law,' and asks, 'Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died… who is at the right hand of God.' God is the one who justifies; the verdict is His, and it is final.
“We maintain therefore that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.”Romans 3:28
“Who could bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes rather, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.”Romans 8:33-34
We are 'justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.' God set Him forth as a propitiation, and 'being now justified by his blood, we will be saved from God's wrath through him.' The basis is the blood and righteousness of Christ, not anything in us.

'To him who doesn't work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.' Blessed is the one 'whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.' Faith is not the merit; it is the hand that receives what is freely given.

For 'him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf; so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.' On the cross Christ bore our sin; through faith we receive His righteousness. Our condemnation is transferred to Him; His righteousness is credited to us.

'Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.' Those He justifies, He glorifies, and we stand 'heirs according to the hope of eternal life.' Justification is not the end of the story; it is the peaceful foundation of everything that follows.
