For the believer, to die is to be with Christ: Scripture speaks of departing to be with Him as far better, and of being at home with the Lord. Then at His return comes the resurrection of the body. For those who reject Christ, death is separation, and judgment awaits.

2 Corinthians 5:1-9
As you read: Absent from the body, at home with the Lord.
1For we know that if the earthly house of our tent is dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens.
2For most certainly in this we groan, longing to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven;
3if so be that being clothed we will not be found naked.
4For indeed we who are in this tent do groan, being burdened; not that we desire to be unclothed, but that we desire to be clothed, that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
5Now he who made us for this very thing is God, who also gave to us the down payment of the Spirit.
6Therefore we are always confident and know that while we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord;
7for we walk by faith, not by sight.
8We are courageous, I say, and are willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be at home with the Lord.
9Therefore also we make it our aim, whether at home or absent, to be well pleasing to him.
Philippians 1:19-24
As you read: To depart and be with Christ, which is far better.
19For I know that this will turn out to my salvation, through your supplication and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
20according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will in no way be disappointed, but with all boldness, as always, now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life, or by death.
21For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
22But if I live on in the flesh, this will bring fruit from my work; yet I don’t know what I will choose.
23But I am in a dilemma between the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.
24Yet, to remain in the flesh is more needful for your sake.
Luke 23:39-43
As you read: Jesus' promise to the thief on the cross.
39One of the criminals who was hanged insulted him, saying, “If you are the Christ, save yourself and us!”
40But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Don’t you even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?
41And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.”
42He said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”
43Jesus said to him, “Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”
Hebrews 9:27-28
As you read: After this, judgment: the solemnity of death.
27Inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment,
28so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, without sin, to those who are eagerly waiting for him for salvation.
We are always confident, and are willing rather to be absent from the body and at home with the Lord. For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.

I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live even if he dies. Jesus told the dying thief, today you will be with me in paradise, and He told His disciples, I go to prepare a place for you.
“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?””John 11:25-26
“Jesus said to him, “Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.””Luke 23:43
“In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also.”John 14:2-3
We will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet, and the dead will be raised imperishable. God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. The body is not abandoned forever.
“Behold, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must become imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality.”1 Corinthians 15:51-53
“For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.”1 Thessalonians 4:14
“But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”Romans 8:11
It is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment. Whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. This is why the gospel is urgent.

“I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and they opened books. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works. The sea gave up the dead who were in it. Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them. They were judged, each one according to his works.”Revelation 20:12-13
