Glory · The Word of God
Scripture is divine: it is God-breathed, the very word of God, living and active. And it is human: it came through real authors, real languages, real circumstances, and real writing. Like Christ Himself, who is fully God and fully man, the Bible is one book with two natures, so that to read these human words is to hear God speaking, and to trust God's word is to trust the words He breathed through His messengers.

2 Timothy 3:14-17
As you read: The word that comes from God's own breath, profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training.
14But you remain in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them.
15From infancy, you have known the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 1:1-4
As you read: God spoke through the prophets in the past, and at the end of the days by His Son.
1God, having in the past spoken to the fathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways,
2has at the end of these days spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds.
3His Son is the radiance of his glory, the very image of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purified us of our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
4having become so much better than the angels, as he has inherited a more excellent name than they have.
1 Thessalonians 2:9-13
As you read: You received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which works in you.
9For you remember, brothers, our labor and travail; for working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached to you the Good News of God.
10You are witnesses with God, how holy, righteously, and blamelessly we behaved ourselves toward you who believe.

Scripture claims a divine origin Paul puts plainly: 'Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching.' The Thessalonians received the apostolic message 'not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe.' Hebrews tells us of God 'having in the past spoken to the fathers through the prophets,' and Jesus could say of the written text, 'the Scripture can't be broken.' When the Bible speaks, God speaks.

The divine authorship never erased the human. Peter says, 'no prophecy ever came by the will of man,' yet it came as 'holy men of God spoke, being moved by the Holy Spirit,' and the same verse insists holy men were the speakers. Luke writes as a careful historian who 'traced the course of all things accurately,' and David could say, 'The Spirit of Yahweh spoke by me. His word was on my tongue.' Paul distinguishes his own counsel, 'not the Lord,' from the Lord's command, showing the writers' real human voices. The Bible is fully human and fully the word of God at once.

“Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us, even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus;”Luke 1:1-3

The church has long seen a likeness between Christ and Scripture: in both, the divine and the human meet without confusion. As the Word became flesh and was truly both God and man, so the God-breathed Scriptures came to us through human authors and are truly both divine and human. We do not have to choose between trusting the words as God's and honoring them as human; Scripture is one word with a divine breath and a human voice, and both are real.

Because it is God-breathed, it is living: 'the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword,' able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Because it is the word of God, it is our authority: 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God,' and Peter calls it 'a lamp shining in a dark place.' We can trust the Bible and submit to it precisely because it is God's own word to us, however human the pens that wrote it.

The practical meaning is simple and profound: when we open the Bible, we are not reading merely ancient human opinion but the enduring word of the living God. Peter quotes the promise, 'the Lord's word endures forever,' and says 'this is the word of Good News which was preached to you,' and Isaiah declares, 'the word of our God stands forever.' Because it is both human and divine, it is both a book we can study as literature and history and a word we must obey as the voice of God. Read it as such: hear the human authors, and through them, the God who breathes.
