What does it mean that Jesus is the Son of David?

¹When the king lived in his house, and Yahweh had given him rest from all his enemies all around,

²the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within curtains.”

³Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart; for Yahweh is with you.”

⁴That same night, Yahweh’s word came to Nathan, saying,

⁵“Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “Shall you build me a house for me to dwell in?

⁶For I have not lived in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have moved around in a tent and in a tabernacle.

⁷In all places in which I have walked with all the children of Israel, did I say a word to any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’”’

⁸Now therefore you shall tell my servant David this, ‘Thus says Yahweh of Armies, “I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people, over Israel.

⁹I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you. I will make you a great name, like the name of the great ones who are in the earth.

¹⁰I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as at the first,

¹¹and as from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. I will cause you to rest from all your enemies. Moreover Yahweh tells you that Yahweh will make you a house.

¹²When your days are fulfilled, and you shall sleep with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who shall proceed out of your bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

¹³He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

¹⁴I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men;

¹⁵but my loving kindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you.

¹⁶Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.”’”

¹⁷According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

¹Yahweh says to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool for your feet.”

²Yahweh will send out the rod of your strength out of Zion. Rule in the midst of your enemies.

³Your people offer themselves willingly in the day of your power, in holy array. Out of the womb of the morning, you have the dew of your youth.

⁴Yahweh has sworn, and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”

⁵The Lord is at your right hand. He will crush kings in the day of his wrath.

⁶He will judge among the nations. He will heap up dead bodies. He will crush the ruler of the whole earth.

⁷He will drink of the brook on the way; therefore he will lift up his head.

⁴¹Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,

⁴²saying, “What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “Of David.”

⁴³He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,

⁴⁴‘The Lord said to my Lord, sit on my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet?’

⁴⁵“If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”

⁴⁶No one was able to answer him a word, neither did any man dare ask him any more questions from that day forward.

³⁵As he came near Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the road, begging.

³⁶Hearing a multitude going by, he asked what this meant.

³⁷They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.

³⁸He cried out, “Jesus, you son of David, have mercy on me!”

³⁹Those who led the way rebuked him, that he should be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “You son of David, have mercy on me!”

⁴⁰Standing still, Jesus commanded him to be brought to him. When he had come near, he asked him,

⁴¹“What do you want me to do?” He said, “Lord, that I may see again.”

⁴²Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight. Your faith has healed you.”

⁴³Immediately he received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God. All the people, when they saw it, praised God.

²⁹“Brothers, I may tell you freely of the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

³⁰Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, he would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,

³¹he foreseeing this spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was his soul left in Hades, nor did his flesh see decay.

³²This Jesus God raised up, to which we all are witnesses.

³³Being therefore exalted by the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this, which you now see and hear.

³⁴For David didn’t ascend into the heavens, but he says himself, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit by my right hand,

³⁵until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’

³⁶“Let all the house of Israel therefore know certainly that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
