Paul describes God's peace from inside a prison cell: it is not a warm mood but a garrison, something that 'will guard your hearts and your thoughts' when anxiety would overrun them. It arrives along a marked path (prayer with thanksgiving), it pairs with a disciplined thought life, and it can be learned even by people whose circumstances never asked their permission.

Philippians 4
As you read: The chain from rejoicing and prayer (4-7) to thinking and practicing (8-9), then contentment learned in every state.
1Therefore, my brothers, beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand firm in the Lord, my beloved.
2I exhort Euodia, and I exhort Syntyche, to think the same way in the Lord.
3Yes, I beg you also, true partner, help these women, for they labored with me in the Good News, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.
4Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, “Rejoice!”
5Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.
6In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
8Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things.
9The things which you learned, received, heard, and saw in me: do these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
10But I rejoice in the Lord greatly, that now at length you have revived your thought for me; in which you did indeed take thought, but you lacked opportunity.
11Not that I speak in respect to lack, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content in it.
12I know how to be humbled, and I know also how to abound. In everything and in all things I have learned the secret both to be filled and to be hungry, both to abound and to be in need.
13I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.
14However you did well that you shared in my affliction.
15You yourselves also know, you Philippians, that in the beginning of the Good News, when I departed from Macedonia, no assembly shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving but you only.
16For even in Thessalonica you sent once and again to my need.
17Not that I seek for the gift, but I seek for the fruit that increases to your account.
18But I have all things, and abound. I am filled, having received from Epaphroditus the things that came from you, a sweet-smelling fragrance, an acceptable and well-pleasing sacrifice to God.
19My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
20Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever! Amen.
21Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me greet you.
22All the saints greet you, especially those who are of Caesar’s household.
23The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
John 14:25-31
As you read: The farewell gift: 'not as the world gives,' spoken on the night before the cross.
25I have said these things to you, while still living with you.
26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.
27Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.
28You heard how I told you, ‘I go away, and I come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I said ‘I am going to my Father;’ for the Father is greater than I.
29Now I have told you before it happens so that, when it happens, you may believe.
30I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world comes, and he has nothing in me.
31But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father commanded me, even so I do. Arise, let us go from here.
Isaiah 26:1-4, 12
As you read: The mind stayed on God, kept in peace because it trusts in Him.
1In that day, this song will be sung in the land of Judah: “We have a strong city. God appoints salvation for walls and bulwarks.
2Open the gates, that the righteous nation may enter: the one which keeps faith.
3You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.
4Trust in Yahweh forever; for in Yah, Yahweh, is an everlasting Rock.
12Yahweh, you will ordain peace for us, for you have also worked all our works for us.
Paul says the peace of God 'will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.' The word pictures a military garrison standing watch. That tells us what biblical peace actually does: it holds the gates while trouble still surrounds the city. Feelings of calm may come and go, but the promise is protection for heart and mind precisely while life stays hard.

The command pair is exact: 'In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.' Every worry is to be converted, same moment, same subject matter, into a request, and gratitude rides along. Anxiety ruminates to no one; prayer hands the same load to Someone, and verse 7's guarding follows directly on verse 6's handing over.

“Cast your burden on Yahweh, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.”Psalms 55:22
Immediately after promising peace, Paul assigns homework: 'whatever things are true... whatever things are lovely... think about these things.' Scripture never treats the mind as passive terrain where thoughts simply happen to us. You cannot always choose what lands in your head, but you can choose what you rehearse, and rehearsed truth is one of peace's regular companions.

Paul writes as a man under guard, and he says contentment is something he 'learned': 'I know how to be humbled, and I know also how to abound.' The secret worked both directions, feast and famine, through Christ who strengthened him (4:13), and his chains had advanced the gospel rather than ending it (1:12-13). Nobody stumbles into this peace; it is acquired like a craft, and hard circumstances are the workshop.

On his last night Jesus said, 'Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you.' The world negotiates peace from calm circumstances; Jesus gives peace before the cross. Isaiah had already named its mechanism centuries earlier: the mind 'steadfast' toward God is kept 'in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.' The feeling, when it comes, rests on a Person, not on the weather of life.
