The gatherings in Scripture have a simple, durable shape: the word read and explained, teaching that leads to response, prayer, the Lord's Supper, singing, and mutual encouragement. None of it depends on a production; all of it depends on the word dwelling richly among us. The question to ask of any gathering is not was it impressive, but did we meet the Word.

Nehemiah 8:1-12
As you read: The word read distinctly, explained until understood, and the understanding turning into weeping, then feasting.
1All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the broad place that was before the water gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Yahweh had commanded to Israel.
2Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all who could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.
3He read therein before the broad place that was before the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.
4Ezra the scribe stood on a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Uriah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam.
5Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:
6and Ezra blessed Yahweh, the great God. All the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” with the lifting up of their hands. They bowed their heads, and worshiped Yahweh with their faces to the ground.
7Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stayed in their place.
8They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.
9Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites who taught the people, said to all the people, “This day is holy to Yahweh your God. Don’t mourn, nor weep.” For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.
10Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved; for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.”
11So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, “Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be grieved.”
12All the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.
Colossians 3:12-17
As you read: The word of Christ dwelling richly, teaching and singing flowing from it, everything done in Jesus' name.
12Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance;
13bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.
14Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.
15And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.
17Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him.
In Nehemiah 8 the returned exiles stand for hours while the law is read aloud, and the Levites 'gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.' Paul's instruction to Timothy is just as unglamorous: 'pay attention to reading, to exhortation, and to teaching.' The center of gathered worship has never been the talent on stage but the voice reading Scripture to the people of God.

When the people finally understand the words, the governor has to tell them not to mourn, because the day is holy. And then: 'All the people went their way... to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.' Real preaching ends in feasting and generosity, not merely in information. Worship that never reaches the table or the neighbor has stopped short of what the word produces.

Luke's summary of the Jerusalem church reads like a checklist that still works: 'They continued steadfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.' Teaching, community, the Table, and prayer. No building mentioned, no style of music, no program. When we gather around those four, we are doing what the church has done from its first days.

Hebrews commands us not to forsake assembling, and gives the reason: 'Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works... exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.' Notice who ministers in that sentence: everyone. The gathering is where each believer arrives carrying something for the others, which is also why missing it quietly starves someone else.
