Baptism with the Spirit is the one-time event that places you into Christ and into His body; filling is the ongoing, repeated experience of being empowered and controlled by Him for daily life and service. Every believer is baptized once; every believer is filled again and again.

1 Corinthians 12:12-14
As you read: Paul's statement that all believers were baptized into one body by one Spirit.
12For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.
13For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all given to drink into one Spirit.

Acts 2:1-4, 14-21
As you read: The Spirit fills the believers, and the result is bold proclamation.
1Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them.
4They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.
14But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and spoke out to them, “You men of Judea, and all you who dwell at Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to my words.
15For these aren’t drunken, as you suppose, seeing it is only the third hour of the day.
16But this is what has been spoken through the prophet Joel:
17‘It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams.
18Yes, and on my servants and on my handmaidens in those days, I will pour out my Spirit, and they will prophesy.
19I will show wonders in the sky above, and signs on the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and billows of smoke.
20The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
21It will be, that whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
Ephesians 5:15-21

15Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise;

17Therefore don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
18Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
19speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; singing, and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
20giving thanks always concerning all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God, even the Father;
21subjecting yourselves one to another in the fear of Christ.
Acts 4:29-31

31When they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were gathered together. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
Paul writes that in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. This is the moment you are placed into Christ, united with Him and with every other believer. It happens at conversion, not at a later experience. It is God's work, not yours.

“Or don’t you know that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him through baptism to death, that just like Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.”Romans 6:3-4

Paul commands, 'Be filled with the Spirit,' using a present tense that implies continuous action. The filling is not a one-time event but a repeated reality: the early church was filled again and again as they faced new challenges and needed new boldness. It is about who controls your life.

Baptism places you in the body; filling empowers you for service. The result of filling is boldness, joy, wisdom, and the ability to speak God's word with power. It is not a second salvation, but a fresh empowering for the work ahead.

“Therefore select from among you, brothers, seven men of good report, full of the Holy Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.”Acts 6:3

The command is not 'be baptized' again, but 'be filled.' This means the filling is something you are responsible to pursue. It comes through prayer, surrender, and obedience, and it is the normal Christian life, not an extraordinary one.

You do not baptize yourself, and you do not fill yourself. Both are the Spirit's work. The difference is that baptism is the foundation laid once at conversion, and filling is the ongoing supply that flows from the same Spirit as you yield to Him.
