The questions/Trail: The Holy Spirit

How do I know the Spirit is leading me?

The Spirit leads every child of God, and His leading never whispers against His own Word. He guides through Scripture, through wisdom and godly counsel, through doors opened and closed in the course of obedience, and through a deepening inner witness of peace and fruit as we walk with Him.

This question arose from studying How do I receive the Holy Spirit? and Why does Jesus call the Spirit 'another Helper'?.

What the Scripture says

Being led is the normal Christian life

Paul does not describe being led by the Spirit as an unusual experience for unusually spiritual people: 'as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God.' Every child of God is led by the Spirit. The call is simple and daily: walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are children of God.
Romans 8:14
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh.
Galatians 5:16
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Galatians 5:18
If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit.
Galatians 5:25

The Spirit never leads against His own Word

The Spirit who inspired Scripture does not contradict Scripture. John's test for any spirit is about Christ: every spirit that confesses Jesus Christ come in the flesh is of God. Paul urges us to test everything against the Word, and the Bereans were praised for examining the Scriptures to check what they were taught. A leading that fights the Bible is not the Spirit's leading.

Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness,
2 Timothy 3:16
Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,
1 John 4:1-2
Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of the mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.
Acts 17:11
Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.
Psalm 119:105

He works through wisdom, prayer, and the Body

Direction is rarely a mystery dropped from heaven; it comes as wisdom sought, asked for, and weighed. James promises that God gives wisdom generously to all who ask. The early church made its great decisions together, and the council at Jerusalem could say, 'It seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us.' Listen for the Spirit in Scripture, in prayer, and in the counsel of godly brothers and sisters.

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
James 1:5
Where there is no wise guidance, the nation falls, but in the multitude of counselors there is victory.
Proverbs 11:14
For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay no greater burden on you than these necessary things:
Acts 15:28

He opens doors and closes doors in the path of obedience

Paul did not receive a blueprint for his journeys; he received a prohibition here and a door there. The Spirit closed the road into Asia and Bithynia, and opened a vision of a man in Macedonia calling for help. The leading came while they were already moving with the gospel, not standing still waiting. Obedience is the atmosphere in which guidance is given.

When they had gone through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. When they had come opposite Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit didn’t allow them. Passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. A vision appeared to Paul in the night. There was a man of Macedonia standing, begging him, and saying, “Come over into Macedonia and help us.” When he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go out to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the Good News to them.
Acts 16:6-10
For you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that.”
James 4:15

The inner witness grows as we walk

The Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are God's children, and His fruit grows in lives walked by Him. The peace of God rules in hearts that belong to His body, and His peace guards hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. The leading of the Spirit deepens with the walk of the Spirit: conviction moves toward settled peace as it lines up with the Word.

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God;
Romans 8:16
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
Colossians 3:15
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:7

Scripture raises the next question

Studying the Word naturally opens more of it. Follow what you just read: it leads somewhere.

How do I grow in sensitivity to the Spirit?

We haven't written this one yet. Take it to your church or small group: the Word answers it wherever it is asked. If we study it here later, all the better.
