How do I know my repentance is genuine?
Genuine repentance shows itself in fruit. Scripture distinguishes real repentance from mere regret: godly sorrow works repentance to salvation and brings no regret, while worldly sorrow works death. Real repentance is a turning from sin to God that changes direction and, over time, produces the evidence of a changed life. We can examine ourselves by the Word: has my heart turned, has my life changed, am I bearing the fruit of repentance?

What the Scripture says
Real repentance is godly sorrow, not mere regret
Paul draws a line that helps us check our own hearts: 'godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world works death.' Regret is sorry for being caught or for the consequences; repentance is sorrow over the sin itself that turns us to God. Paul rejoiced that the Corinthians' sorry had been 'to repentance' in a godly way, and he could point to what it worked: 'what earnest care... what defense, indignation, fear, longing, zeal!' The proof of genuine sorrow was the change it worked.
For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world works death. For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
I now rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that you were made sorry to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly way, that you might suffer loss by us in nothing. Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
For behold, this same thing, that you were made sorry in a godly way, what earnest care it worked in you. Yes, what defense, indignation, fear, longing, zeal, and vengeance! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be pure in the matter. For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.
It produces fruit
John the Baptist met claimed repentance with a demand: 'Produce fruit worthy of repentance!' When the crowds asked what they should do, he pointed to concrete changes, giving to the needy and turning from greed. Genuine repentance is not a feeling that goes nowhere; it is a turning that changes what a person actually does, and the changed behavior is its evidence.
Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance!Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.”He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
but declared first to them of Damascus, at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance. But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.
It makes right what it can
Where repentance can restore, it does. Zacchaeus, after meeting Jesus, declared, 'half of my goods I give to the poor. If I have wrongfully exacted anything of anyone, I restore four times as much,' and Jesus replied, 'Today, salvation has come to this house.' And James summons us to confess our offenses to one another and pray, that we may be healed. The man who had grown rich by cheating turned and set things right, and that visible turning, confessed and restored, was the sign that his heart had genuinely changed.
Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor. If I have wrongfully exacted anything of anyone, I restore four times as much.”And Zaccheus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
Jesus said to him, “Today, salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
It humbles us, with a broken heart before God
Real repentance does not defend itself; it casts itself on God. David, after his terrible fall, prayed, 'Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me,' and he named the thing God accepts: 'a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.' Jesus said the tax collector who cried, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' went home justified, while the self-justifying man did not. The humble are the ones who truly repent.
Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn’t even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
And it turns to God and keeps going
Repentance is measured by its direction. Paul preached that people should 'repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance,' and John wrote that if we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive and cleanse. Repentance is not a single burst of feeling but a turning that continues: we own our sin honestly, we turn from it, we make it right where we can, and over time the fruit of a changed life confirms that it was real, because the one who turns to God keeps walking toward Him.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
What happens when I sin after I've come to Christ?→Our Walk with Him trail“My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have a Counselor with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous. And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”How do I fight sin in my life?→Our Walk with Him trail“Thus consider yourselves also to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore don’t let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. Neither present your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God, as alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin will not have dominion over you. For you are not under law, but under grace.Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.”We haven't written this one yet.
